It is unfortunate that i am going to have to put the blog on a temporary hiatus. It is not something that i particularly want to do but don't have much choice simply because i just do not have the time to commit to posting quality music to the blog like i had always aimed for. I cannot give a accurate estimate as to how long this hiatus will last, but i am hopeful that it won't be for too long. In the mean time, there are plenty of other Hip-Hop blogs, including those in my affiliates, which you can check out.

The month of June, here we come. The Speakerbox Presents The Underground artist for this month is Chiddy Bang. Chiddy Bang are an American band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group consists of Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege, a.k.a. Proto, and Noah Beresin, better known as Xaphoon Jones, and Dan Summers, who met at Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA. Their sound is based on the fusion of hip hop and unique sample choices from alternative leaning artists. You may have heard their song 'Opposite Of Adults' which samples MGMT's 'Kids'. The song did it's rounds on the internet and was positively received, and even charted well here in the UK gaining a peak of number 12.

Despite this, i want to give them this spot cause they do genuinely have skills and are a bunch of talented guys. Their success shouldn't be based off the samples they use, although it must be said, their choice of samples does make them unique and interesting and definately aids their appeal.

Known for his impressive wordplay and introspective lyricism, Ontario-based rapper Shad debuted in 2005 with the self-made When This Is Over that he paid for by winning a talent competition. His underground buzz maintained, but it was not until 2007’s The Old Prince that his body of work would be recognized as a bigger level.

He received two nominations for the LP in 2008 from the Juno and Polaris committees, though victory eluded him. Shad substantially stepped it up both lyrically, as heard on lead single “Yaa I Get It,” and contributor-wise for 2010’s TSOL. The album features Broken Social Scene’s Lisa Lobsinger and Brendan Canning along with singer Justin Nozuka and rapper Kamau.

Roll on the month of May, and a drum roll please for Cubbiebear. Cubbiebear is a rapper out of Baltimore, Maryland. Truth be told, he has a sound which won't appeal to everyone. It isn't your typical jazz rap or anything like that so if that's what your looking for, then you won't find it here. But what you will find is production which is very creative, very atmospheric, and very distorted and somewhat trippyish at times. This guy who pulls no punches. He delivers some sharp lyrics which echo nothing but brutal honesty and emotion.

He hasn't had some new material for a while but the good news is that he is currently working on a new project called 'Force Back To Sleep' with no set release date.

Last year The Strange Fruit project released the M.A.S.K (Making Art Sound Kool) EP. This release is a remix version of that EP. The remixes are courtesy of a Brazilian DJ/producer called Laudz who decided to add his touch to the songs after SFP released the instrumentals and acapella's shortly after the original release.

The remix EP showcases his knack for infectious melodies and larger than life production. There is no doubt Laudz took these acappellas and made them his own. As a member of the Elementality family, Laudz has produced tracks for artists like Silent Knight, MadKem & M. Josephine as part of DJ K.O.’s Living Out A State of Mind EP series.

We are back again with the artist of the month..

For the month of March it will be Chicago native, Grieves. I couldn't decide whether or not to put him up as it seems that some people have heard of Grieves, and some others haven't. But then i thought, well if your one of the ones that hasn't then it's about time you did, and rest assured you will as he has recently just signed to one of the best labels for underground Hip-Hop and that's Rhymesayers. His first release on Rhymesayer's is the reissue of his sophomore album with Budo '88 Keys & Counting' is released today.

You'll love Grieves if you like the nerdy white boy emo rap aka Atmosphere....okay, not really...well yes really but to just bluntly put it like that would be a disservice to Grieves, who has got great skills on the mic. This album, Irreversible, is his first album which is a well put together CD and it possesses moments of absolute greatness. Check it out.

Since his birth in Chicago, IL, Benjamin Laub (bka Grieves) enjoyed a diverse musical upbringing, exposed at an early age to the city’s local jazz and blues clubs by his father. The Soul System EP is the newest project from Detroit's Nametag, produced entirely by Black Bethoven. The concept of the "Soul System" is, "One producer, One emcee, One concept...One EP." It came about originally with Black Bethoven preparing to release an instrumental CD to follow up 2009's "Da Ear Hustle" but with an idea inspired by Dub MD, the emcee and producer decided to team up and create a music piece that provides food for thought you wouldn't find in your local grocery aisle. With tracks like "Time" which is the EP's leading single, Nametag and Black Bethoven prove that soul music has a permanent spot in the hip hop genre.

After a plethra of mixtapes and EPs, Nametag is finally releasing his first official solo album titled "The Name Is Tag". Although there is no set release date yet, Nametag has confirmed the album will be a 2010 release. The production for the LP is a definite eyebrow raiser with beat contributions from international producer Black Milk, Black Bethoven and Chris Sholar. It is also filled with guest features from groups such as Street Justice, Cold Men Young, and champion-esque collabs with Finale, Quest M.C.O.D.Y, Buff 1 and Ro Spit. It's safe to say that "The Name Is Tag" will be an undeniable album, stay tuned.

For the past few years, Cleveland native/ Brooklyn transplant Terry Urban (yes, that's his real name) has been making some big waves throughout the global DJ and mixtape circuit. While Born Like This is not without its highlights, DOOM chose wisely in asking producers to remix that album’s finest track in “Gazzillion Ear.” The already-dope beat-changing production by J Dilla gets tackled by the likes of Thom Yorke, Dr. Who Dat?, and Jneiro Jarel. The Radiohead frontman’s wild remix already appeared as an iTunes bonus track, but it’s nice to have it offered here sans DRM. Bedroom beatmakers are catered to, also, as DOOM’s wordplay-intensive verses appear as an a cappella track. Most enticing, though, are the three unreleased tracks. Here’s hoping this is only the beginning of another string of new DOOM projects, such as the oft-delayed Madvillain follow-up and Ghostface collaboration.

Speakerbox Presents The Underground: February 2010

As part of the Speakerbox revamp, i have decided to begin doing a monthly artist limelight kind of thing. The artists i feature will not be the Oddisee, Input, Braille and all the others that frequently get posted here. Not because they arn't good but because lets face it, they are pretty well known to any underground head. The artists that i will put up will be guys who are working hard to get to the level that those guys are known. I frequently get emails people asking me to post their music and i thought that it was about time i really did, so that is the point of this new feature to the blog, it's all about giving them some exposure.

The first ever feature for Speakerbox Presents The Underground, for the month of February 2010 is a 20 year old rapper from Baltimore called 810. I had previously not heard any of his stuff before he emailed me and i decided to hit up his Myspace and was pleasantly surprised, hence why he is being posted here. He's got some dope lyrics and a good flow. The music itself has a nice modern contemporary sound which is sure to please a lot of ears. You can go to his Myspace and listen for yourselves. Blog Changes..

Right so you may have noticed a lot of the links have been removed, this is because i have received emails asking for them to be removed which is fair. The statement in the 'About This Blog' section clearly states that if you have a problem with anything then just drop me a email and links will be removed and i have always complied with this.

However, i received an email from Oddisee basically saying that the blog doesn't do enough to actually promote artists and i can see how he would jump to this conclusion. So i have decided that Speakerbox will go through some changes. From now on i will be providing links to purchase albums, links to artists websites/myspace, and hopefully when i have time some reviews. There have been a few other changes that i have thought about implementing, like for example getting in some other contributors but i am still undecided on these things and for the time being will be focusing on integrating some of the previously listed improvements into the blog.

It is my hope that these transitional changes that Speakerbox will go through will in the long term help to improve the blog not only for the general visitors, but also the artists.
