Blog Hiatus

>> Wednesday, 7 July 2010

It is unfortunate that i am going to have to put the blog on a temporary hiatus. It is not something that i particularly want to do but don't have much choice simply because i just do not have the time to commit to posting quality music to the blog like i had always aimed for. I cannot give a accurate estimate as to how long this hiatus will last, but i am hopeful that it won't be for too long. In the mean time, there are plenty of other Hip-Hop blogs, including those in my affiliates, which you can check out.

RJD2 - Inversions of the Colossus [2010]

>> Wednesday, 23 June 2010

Artist: RJD2
Release Title: Inversions of the Colossus
Date Of Release: 2010

Following on the success of The Colossus, producer/DJ/instrumentalist extraordinaire RJD2 returns with Inversions of the Colossus, a companion piece of its own unique nature. The “instrumental” album is a time-honored tradition in hip-hop that RJD2 has taken advantage of whenever possible (without an instrumental version of “Magnificent City”, there would be no MAD MEN theme!) However, in classic RJ fashion, he decided to create Inversions with a new twist on the idea: in essence, all 7 of the vocal songs on The Colossus appear here sans vocals.

01. 3:04 The Perfect Occasion
02. 5:28 Games You Can Win (Instrumental)
03. 2:51 Liquid Luck
04. 4:26 The Glow (Instrumental)

Speakerbox Presents The Underground: June 2010

>> Thursday, 3 June 2010

The month of June, here we come. The Speakerbox Presents The Underground artist for this month is Chiddy Bang. Chiddy Bang are an American band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group consists of Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege, a.k.a. Proto, and Noah Beresin, better known as Xaphoon Jones, and Dan Summers, who met at Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA. Their sound is based on the fusion of hip hop and unique sample choices from alternative leaning artists. You may have heard their song 'Opposite Of Adults' which samples MGMT's 'Kids'. The song did it's rounds on the internet and was positively received, and even charted well here in the UK gaining a peak of number 12.

Despite this, i want to give them this spot cause they do genuinely have skills and are a bunch of talented guys. Their success shouldn't be based off the samples they use, although it must be said, their choice of samples does make them unique and interesting and definately aids their appeal.

Shad substantially stepped it up both lyrically, as heard on lead single “Yaa I Get It,” and contributor-wise for 2010’s TSOL. LMNO And Kev Brown - Selective Hearing Part 2 [2010]

Artist: LMNO And Kev Brown
Release Title: Selective Hearing Part 2
Date Of Release: 2010

The critically acclaimed LMNO & Kev Brown project Selective Hearing (Up Above) was a near perfect pairing of LMNO’s conscious lyrics and vintage Kev Brown production, earning the duo early Grammy nods in 2008. On May 11th, the duo will release Selective Hearing Part 2, their highly anticipated follow-up to their 2008 classic.

In contrast to their first album, which was recorded by sending one another beats and vocals via e-mail, Selective Hearing Part 2 was recorded together at the Technicali Lab in Southern California during Kev Brown’s various trips to the West Coast. Entirely produced by Kev Brown, the two also decided that it was only right to have both LMNO and Kev rapping on each track, as opposed to their first album where Kev was only featured on a handful, vocally. Upon completion of the album, the duo enlisted a barrage of guest emcees from both sides of the coast including Chali 2Na (Jurassic 5), Declaime, Kenn Starr, Hassaan Mackay, Kaimbr, Mr. Brady (Deep Rooted), and Trek Life.

Speakerbox Presents The Underground: May 2010

Roll on the month of May, and a drum roll please for Cubbiebear. Cubbiebear is a rapper out of Baltimore, Maryland. Truth be told, he has a sound which won't appeal to everyone. It isn't your typical jazz rap or anything like that so if that's what your looking for, then you won't find it here. But what you will find is production which is very creative, very atmospheric, and very distorted and somewhat trippyish at times. This guy who pulls no punches. He delivers some sharp lyrics which echo nothing but brutal honesty and emotion.

He hasn't had some new material for a while but the good news is that he is currently working on a new project called 'Force Back To Sleep' with no set release date.

Artist: Joe Kickass
Release Title: Let Me Introduce EP
Date Of Release: 2010

Let me introduce Joe Kickass, a young and eager cat with many talents and a great passion for everything oldskool. Frustrated by most of today’s hiphop, Joe drops the accessories and takes it back to basics. With him contributing ill illustrations to the artwork and composing on five of the six tracks, it's fair to say this EP proves that he's more then just your average MC.

With a full length album droppin' later this year, Project: Mooncircle brings you this debut release to let the world get acquainted with their newest addition. The beats are raw, gritty and drenched with soul and jazz influences. Joe tops them off with his raw voice, high impact lyrics and on point delivery.

Panacea is based out of the Washington DC area where producer K-Murdock, a Maryland native, has provided his fantasy hip-hop soundscapes for soul singers such as Grammy-nominated R&B artist, Raheem DeVaughn.

>> Sunday, 11 April 2010

Artist: Asher Roth
Release Title: Seared Foie Gras With Quince & Cranberry
Date Of Release: 2010

While he didn't exactly fall off everyone's radars like some other blog-endorsed rappers did, Asher Roth hasn't really been around all that much for the past six months. As such, it wouldn't be totally off base to call his latest mixtape, Seared Foie Gras With Quince & Cranberry, his minor return.

And he's brought plenty of friends with him for this one. The project features Talib Kweli, Blu, Pac Div, B.o.B, and several others while beats were "served by" the likes of J Dilla, Just Blaze, Jake One, Kanye West, and Will.I.Am. Of course, one must keep in mind that this is a mixtape, so many of the beats on here are likely of the "beat-jackin'" nature.

Speakerbox Presents The Underground: April 2010

>> Thursday, 1 April 2010

For the month of April 2010, the Speakerbox Presents The Underground artist of the month is a dude called Shawn Crystopher. It took me a while to catch on to this guy, and when i finally did decide to give him a listen, i was kicking myself for not doing it sooner. His sound somewhat reminds me abit of Kid Cudi / Kanye West on '808 & Heartbreak' which will probably make some of you want to vomit at the thought, but please don't that stop you from atleast checking him out at cause where Kanye lacks on the mic skills, Shawn Chrystopher certainly does not.

The remix EP showcases his knack for infectious melodies and larger than life production. There is no doubt Laudz took these acappellas and made them his own. Kidz In The Hall - Jukebox [VIDEO]

>> Friday, 5 March 2010

To follow up the last post - here is Kidz In The Hall's most recent video, and the first video to be taken from the 'Land Of Make Believe' album in support of the album's first single 'Jukebox'.

Kidz In The Hall – Land Of Make Believe [2010]

Artist: Kidz In The Hall
Release Title: Land Of Make Believe
Date Of Release: 2010

The Chicago group, Kidz In The Hall are well known throughout the underground scene. They made an impact with their first album 'School Was My Hustle' in 2006 and then followed that up with their second album 'The In Crowd' in 2008. Now they are back in 2010 with their third album 'Land Of Make Believe'.

On their third album, the duo of Naledge and Double-O take a look at themselves as artists and examine where they are and where they should be, which is what The Land of Make Believe references. With this new introspection comes a new sound, with lead singles "Flickin'" and "Jukebox" going in an even glossier direction than previous cuts like "I Got It Made" and "Love Hangover." Expect Double-O to handle the bulk of production once again.

Speakerbox Presents The Underground: March 2010

>> Tuesday, 2 March 2010

We are back again with the artist of the month..

For the month of March it will be Chicago native, Grieves. I couldn't decide whether or not to put him up as it seems that some people have heard of Grieves, and some others haven't. But then i thought, well if your one of the ones that hasn't then it's about time you did, and rest assured you will as he has recently just signed to one of the best labels for underground Hip-Hop and that's Rhymesayers. His first release on Rhymesayer's is the reissue of his sophomore album with Budo '88 Keys & Counting' is released today.

You'll love Grieves if you like the nerdy white boy emo rap aka Atmosphere....okay, not really...well yes really but to just bluntly put it like that would be a disservice to Grieves, who has got great skills on the mic. This album, Irreversible, is his first album which is a well put together CD and it possesses moments of absolute greatness. Check it out.

Artist: Grieves
Release Title: Irreversible
Date Of Release: 2007

Since his birth in Chicago, IL, Benjamin Laub (bka Grieves) enjoyed a diverse musical upbringing, exposed at an early age to the city’s local jazz and blues clubs by his father. After relocating to Fort Collins, CO and eventually Seattle at age 19, Grieves had broadened his array of musical influences to include punk rock and eventually became completely immersed in Hip Hop as an art form.

Following his debut album Irreversible in 2007, Grieves began collaborating with local Seattle-based producer Budo, a talented multi-instrumentalist that helped complete the organic-yet-intense sound of 15 melodic, sample-free tracks that became 88 Keys & Counting. Following rave reviews of the album’s mainly digital release, Grieves and Budo hit the road once again to set up shop in New York City, where they are currently at work on the follow-up to 88 Keys, due for a Fall release this year on Rhymesayers. Untethered to common restraints of the hip-hop genre, the combination of Grieves’ singing and rapping with the refreshing horn, guitar, and keyboard driven production by Budo presents Grieves strongest work to date”
